Is Deep Tissue Massage Supposed to Hurt?

Deep tissue massage is often associated with strong pressure and muscle relief, but many people wonder if it’s supposed to feel painful.

The short answer is: It should feel effective, but not overwhelming or painful.

At My Thai Massage Too in Southwest Las Vegas, we focus on helping guests relieve tension while staying comfortable throughout the session.

What Deep Tissue Massage Actually Feels Like

Deep tissue massage targets deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.

During the session, you may feel:

  • firm pressure

  • slow, focused movements

  • tension release in tight areas

  • a sensation often described as “good pressure”

Some areas of the body — like the shoulders, neck, and lower back — may feel more sensitive if they are especially tight.

The Difference Between Pressure and Pain

It’s important to understand the difference between:

Effective pressure

vs

Uncomfortable or sharp pain

Good pressure should feel:

  • relieving

  • productive

  • manageable

Pain that is too intense can cause the body to tighten, which actually works against the benefits of the massage.

Communication Is Key

One of the most important parts of any massage is communication.

During your session, you should always feel comfortable letting your therapist know if:

  • the pressure is too strong

  • you want more focus on a certain area

  • something feels uncomfortable

Your therapist can adjust techniques to keep the experience both effective and relaxing.

What You Might Feel Afterward

After a deep tissue massage, it’s normal to feel:

  • looser

  • more mobile

  • slightly sore in worked areas

This mild soreness usually fades within a day or two and is similar to how your body feels after a good workout.

Drinking water and allowing your body to rest can help support recovery.

Finding the Right Balance

The goal of deep tissue massage is not to push through pain, but to help release tension in a controlled and supportive way.

At My Thai Massage Too, our therapists adjust pressure based on your comfort level to ensure a positive experience.

Trust me when I say you must go get a deep tissue massage if you've never had one. Not every time, as I prefer Swedish, but it's good to mix these in once in awhile.
